A Dirty Martini Recipe for the Father of the Bride

After spending a year listening to stories about wedding gowns, guest lists and the cost of a wedding cake, your dad probably deserves a cocktail.  Here is a recipe for a dirty martini that I am sure the Father of the Bride will enjoy.

But First, What Makes a Martini Dirty?

You make your martini “dirty” when you add olive brine. What is olive brine? It is the salty liquid that jarred olives are packed in. The brine adds a salty, savory flavor and gives the drink a cloudy, greenish hue. The more brine added, the “dirtier” the martini becomes. When you make a dirty martini, you typically garnish it with one or more green olives.

What is the Difference Between “Shaken” and ”Stirred”

The difference comes down to texture, temperature, and clarity. When you stir a martini, you get a clear, smooth, and strong drink. But, when you shake it, the cocktail turns colder, slightly cloudy, and a bit more airy. Traditionally, bartenders stir martinis because they’re make them entirely of spirits, and a gentle stir keeps that crystal-clear look and velvety texture. Shaking, on the other hand, is best for cocktails with juice or cream—ingredients that need a little more energy to blend beautifully.
